Rich Elias' review of Amour

February 13, 2013

“Amour” is the last major Oscar contender to open in Columbus, rounding out the strongest group of nominees I’ve seen in years, even decades. This French film by the German writer and director Michael Haneke was a sure bet to win a spot in the foreign language film competition. The surprise is that “Amour” is also in contention for Best Picture. It won’t surprise me if Haneke takes home both Oscars, because “Amour” is definitely the most powerful and moving film out there.

Special thanks to our sponsors, The Other Paper, SUNNY 95 FM Radio, WOW Cable and Hot Cards Columbus, all the Bexley area restaurants for providing delicious hors d'oeuvres, and our great volunteers who helped at the event. Remembering John Brennan

February 02, 2012

On behalf of our Board of Directors and the staff of the Drexel, our thoughts and prayers are with the Brennan family at this difficult time. - Richard A. Stoff, Chairman of the Board, Friends of the Drexel, Inc.

Circumstance, Revenge of The Electric Car

November 09, 2011

In vibrant, contemporary Tehran, Iran, two beautiful teenage girls struggle to find their personal freedom. Atafeh (Nicohl Boosheri) and her friend Shireen (Sarah Kazemy) are full of youthful exuberance and a healthy streak of rebellion as they frequent the underground, banned culture of nightclubs and parties. Their friendship deepens and they fall into a forbidden love affair, further driving a wedge between their public and private selves. When Atafeh’s brother Mehran (Reza Sixo Safai) returns home from drug rehab, he has become a devout Muslin and member of the moral police. Suddenly, the two siblings are entangled in a triangle of suspense, surveillance, and betrayal as the once liberal and safe haven of the family home becomes a place of danger.

Ides of March Special Screening a Success!

October 31, 2011

Kate Lindsmith, a recent Boston University Graduate and freelance writer, recounts the Ides of March special event. "If you weren’t there, you should know that the Drexel’s October 19 screening of The Ides of March was a huge success! It sparked debate, straddled party lines, and ended with a massive group hug (ok, maybe no group hug, but things still ended well). Playing for a sold-out auditorium, the film explored ideas of political idealism, fatalism, and betrayal..."
